Miss Meghan

The Monroe piercing, is taken from legendary beauty, Marilyn Monroe. Facial piercings in this area or on either side of the nose are also known as Madonnas, or even Crawfords, taken from the famous mole of supermodel Cindy Crawford. All three women bore such distinctive beauty marks. Monroe and Crawford on their left side, and Madonna on the right (though she eventually had hers removed). With all piercings, you must first decide if the piercing is for you. Marilyn Monroe has always been an icon for me. I remember even as a young girl, I would watch her movies, my favorite being (Some Like it Hot), and even dressing up as her for Halloween.

Interestingly enough, I got my Monroe piercing done on a whim. I was out to dinner with a good friend of mine and ran the idea by her, never thinking she would go for it. Next thing I knew, we were on our way to a nearby tattoo shop. Once we parked and walked inside, I immediately began second guessing my decision to get a piercing, especially on my face.

I began flipping through the piercer’s portfolio. I eventually built up the nerve to sign that waiver and walk back into the room to get my piercing. The few people that were in the shop at that late hour of 11 o’clock were even supportive of my decision and assured me that it would look good on me. I also did not choose just any random tattoo shop, as I have heard bad experiences from those who have not taken into consideration doing a little research first. I went to the tattoo shop where I actually got my first tattoo, about 4 years ago.

As far as pain goes, I would like to think that I have a particularly high tolerance. I was not worried about the pain that might go into getting this piercing done. I was more worried that it would look weird or out of my place. The procedure was complete from start to finish within three minutes. I did not feel any pain and when I got to look at my new piercing, I was both relieved and pleased with how it turned out.

There are a certain amount of health risks with oral piercings and should be taken into consideration before getting any facial piercings done. I have sensitive skin and feared that my lip would flare up because of being pierced. Luckily enough, I had minimal swelling that went away within two days of getting pierced. Whe n it came to the aftercare, for me, it was simple. I made sure to be very careful when getting dressed and washing my face, as with any facial piercing, it is common for it to get caught on clothes and towels. The piercer gave me a sheet with clear aftercare instructions and gave me a brief rundown as well.  My aftercare instructions included: Dissolving 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt into one cup (8 oz.) of warm distilled or bottled water and soaking for 5-10 minutes two to three times per day, followed by gently patting with a clean paper product. This was to be completed for 4-6 weeks, until the piercing was completed healed.

Nearly two years later, I still have my Monroe piercing and still love it as much as I did the first day I got it.
